This is a traditional song from the western (NOT country and western) folk
genre.  I first heard it, sung by a long-forgotten western folk singer and
recorded on an old 78 rpm record, in my youth.

It has been recorded by both the Sons of the Pioneers and by Jim Croce, as
well as by many others.  A version may be found at my favorite folk music
