When I worked at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles we developed
an exhibit called the Tiniest Giants: Discovering Dinosaur Eggs, where
we used ground up recycled tire rubber as a substitute for sand in our
dig pit. It seemed to work well, without all the mess that sand
creates.
