ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I am working under an IMLS funded grant at the Pacific Science Center titled
VAST (Volunteer and Staff Training). The main purpose of the grant is to
create a sustainable training program for front line exhibit interpreter
staff and volunteers. We are training on both interpretive technique and
science content. Although the training program is not tied into any
particular exhibit, there are elements that could be applied to a specific
traveling exhibit or a special program. I am happy to share the lessons we
have learned so far with those who are interested.
I also attended an ASTC RAP last December at the NY Hall of Science
specifically about floor staff professional development. We had great
discussions and are working to stay connected and advance these
conversations about the front line.

The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation is
currently traveling an exhibition entitled "Invention at Play" which
includes floor staff training. The exhibition is being administered
through ASTC, but it is the education staff of LemCen which does the
training. THe person in charge of training is Monica Smith and can be
