I had an interesting experience several years ago when I applied for my
father's service record through formal U.S. government channels. He served the
U.S. Army in France and Germany from 1943 until he received a serious wound in
1945 and remained in service until he recouperated enough to go home. Although
I received a letter informing me the records burned, I received a telephone
call from a woman who demanded my identification. When I replied, she said,
"You sound just like him" and then hung up. Who the heck would have known my
dad?
