Regarding curious lumber -
when I read the post - what came to mind is the marking of trees in the forest prior to cutting them fown for specific purposes. I recall refernce to marking large trees with a "broad Arrow" in the early 17th century to desiginate that tree as the king's tree and meant for use as a mast of a ship.
There were further shipbuilding refernces to trees which were growing in a contorted fashion. i.e -curves - to assist in making frame parts for the hull of a ship.
