Valleys of Stone
Edited by Pam Smith, Donald Pate and Robert Martin

The history and archaeology of colonial South
Australia are brought together for the first time
in this highly illustrated volume. The result is
an interpretation of settlement patterns that
date from the earliest days of the colony set
within a landscape now described as possibly one
of the best preserved historic landscapes
representing the era of eighteenth and nineteenth
century European global expansion and colonization to be found anywhere.

Set among the hills and valleys of Adelaide’s
hills face, the chapters contain descriptions of
historical events and places, together with
archaeological interpretations of their
contemporary footprint and heritage significance.

The book is the outcome of the three year Hills
Face Zone Cultural Heritage Project, Department
of Archaeology, Flinders University. The twenty
authors are individuals dedicated to ‘their’
subject, often providing personal insights into historical events and places.

Each chapter is illustrated with rare historic
photographs, paintings, sketches and maps from
the nineteenth century – many of which are being published for the first time.

This book is also a companion volume to
Adelaide’s Hills Face Heritage GIS Database. -
