As to the game of bottle caps, my fingernails got blue from flicking upside
down caps along asphalt in games designed in chalk to land in squares,
diamonds and on lines. Now that I think about it, these were probably the bottle
caps that got the pennies in wax, which were attempts at gaining better control.
Strangely enough, all the schools outlawed bottle caps in the 1950s. Of
course, outlawed games were all the rage in those days. Same with marbles and Pez
machines. I can imagine a lot of teachers with burgeoning pockets full of
marbles, bottle caps and Pez machines at the end of a day.
