The town site of New Philadelphia, Illinois, was added to the National
Register of Historic Places as a nationally significant archaeological
resource on August 11, 2005. New Philadelphia was founded by Frank
McWorter, a free African American, in 1836, and grew as a multi-racial
community through the late nineteenth century.
