I am giving a brief paper (10 min. Research Report) at SHA
2005 in Sacramento entitled:
"Ebay As a Research Tool in Historical Archaeology".
This is an example from prehistoric archaeology--I use ebay for finding
postcards with archaeological themes, particularly depictions of Indian mounds. It
sure beats going to flea markets and flipping through hundreds and hundreds of
postcards in search of that one elusive card I've been trying to find for
decades. The vol. 84 no. 2 issue of The Wisconsin Archeologist will have an
article on "Indian Mounds in Postcards from Wisconsin." I found example from 21
different Wisconsin mounds or mound groups shown on postcards, and more than
one-half were discovered in the past six years via their appearance on ebay
despite having searching for this postcard subject for more than 25 years in
postcard shops and flea markets. Yes, I had to buy the postcards in order to use them
in the article. Also you can get a better image by scanning the card yourself.
