I just wanted to take a minute to thanks everyone who responded with identifications on the recent "stump the chumps" quiz. Rich Green was the quickest -- responded within 15 minutes I think -- thanks a bunch Rich. And, as a bonus, he was also right . . . the artifact looks like a mid to late 19th century saddle shield. We did some looking in one of Steffen's Horse Soldier volumes and actually saw a drawing of this exact piece!
