Monday-Friday, June 27-August 5, 2205.
Santa Barbara, California
8 quarter credits
$995 (tuition only)
must be 18 years of age

An intensive 6-week combination of excavations and laboratory analysis of
historical archaeological materials from the Spanish Presidio of Santa Barbara
(1782-1821) and later periods. This last of 4 military posts in Spanish
California was intended primarily to defend the province from foreign invasion. We
will be working just inside the Second Defense Wall, prior to the
reconstruction of the northwest corner of the complex. Attention will be focused on
architectural information that will be useful for this effort.

The Presidio is located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, a resort town
of shops, restaurants, Spanish Revival architecture, and fantastic beaches.
This ideal temperate climate is marked by cool foggy mornings and sunny
afternoons. The class will be accommodated without charge at a group campsite at El
Capitan State Beach, where hot showers and electricity are available.
Students are responsible for their own food. Applicants should be in good physical
shape and have valid tetanus shots.
