Jane Erb:
>I admire Vanska, but especially for his interpretations of
>music from his native Finland and surrounding countries.
I would pit his Sibelius against all comers, and I recently acquired--just
because Vanska was conducting--a wonderful recording Vanska did of Uuono
Klami's ballet Whirls (Pyorteita--umlauts on the "o" and "a"), Act I,
orchestrated by Kalevi Aho; and Klami's Violin Concerto (with Jennifer
Koh (who's name seems familiar, though I cannot place her.) Never heard
any of this before; as Aho notes, Klami's music is more driven by rhythm
than by thematic development.
