FIELD SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT
University of Massachusetts Boston / Eastern Pequot Archaeological Field
School
July 5th - August 5th, 2005
Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation Reservation, North Stonington, Connecticut
In collaboration with the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, the UMass Boston
archaeological field school will undertake its third year of intensive
survey of tribal lands to identify and document archaeological sites
dating from several thousand years ago to the recent European colonial
period. The primary focus will be on historical archaeological sites
dating to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries in an effort to study
Native American responses to colonialism. Alongside tribal interns,
field school students will receive training in a number of
archaeological techniques such as map-making, shovel testing,
excavation, material culture identification, and perhaps geophysical
prospecting. Eastern Pequot families have occupied this historic
reservation since 1683 and have strong ties to the landscape where their
ancestors have lived for thousands of years. The field school offers a
unique opportunity for students to work closely with Native Americans on
a common goal of understanding indigenous histories on indigenous lands.
Other field school activities will include laboratory work, field trips,
and guest lectures.
For more information and an application, please visit
www.faculty.umb.edu/stephen_silliman/research and click on the
appropriate link. You may also want to consult the recent Spring 2005
issue (Volume 9, Issue 1) of American Archaeology, the quarterly
magazine of The Archaeological Conservancy, for a six-page story on last
year's collaborative field school. You will find a link to the full
article on the website noted above. The field school fee of $1,595
(undergraduate) or $1,695 (graduate) covers university credit hours,
instruction, field activities, housing, and food costs but not basic
student supplies, required health insurance, or transportation to and
from the field school.
Half of the available student spaces are already taken by current
applicants, so anyone interested should submit an application as soon as
possible. The absolute deadline is April 29th, but I expect to have
most, if not all, positions filled 2-3 weeks before that time.
Please contact me if you have any questions about the program,
activities, research, or eligibility.
