It is all part of a conspiracy of ignorance. The Virginia Dept of
Education has written requirements for the licensing of teachers. But
the interpretation is left up to licensure "specialists". If you want to
teach history, one of the requirements is a certain number of hours in
"World History". But bless their little hearts, only Western European
history counts. Archaeology courses could not possibly count, as they
are not taught in history departments. I wonder where they think most of
what we know about pre-history comes from? Really reinforces the old
adage that if you can't do, teach, and if you can't teach work for the
government! they have also determined that college calculus doesn't
count towards the mathematics requirement, because most of what you
would encounter in the public schools is pre-calculus. Do real
universities teach algebra and geometry. except as remedial courses?
