Yes, acceptance of the "conventions" is essential. In mathematics, the
conventions are well established, definitive, and quantifiable. In art
music, the conventions of what constitutes a "poetic" performance basically
do not exist. Much of this is based on necessity. For mathematics to be
viable, conventions must be complied with. This condition is not necessary
in music.
