I think you mean the _British_ National Anthem.  If _England_ has a
National Anthem it's usually "Land Of Hope and Glory " that's played.
You'll never work for the BBC, David! ;-)  (You really have to be here
at the moment to understand that reference.)

You are right, though, the tune is dire.
