Science is trying to figure out what the world is really like and how it really works, whether we would like it to be that way or not.

Yes, the "what the world is really like" arcs toward an unrealistic lack of ambiguity, but note that it's an *arc toward* an ultimate ground and away from wishful thinking and equivocation, not a slam dunk into infexible dogma. 

And I had to include the production of potentially unpleasant truths. The evidence about our origins being the most obvious one; but others being that maybe plastics weren't such a great idea after all, it may not be possible to live to 150, and we have yet to find any evidence of an immortal soul.
