The National Park Service is currently seeking to fill two new term
archeology positions. These positions will serve as key staff in the
Independence Living History Center Archeology Laboratory (ILHCAL). The
ILHCAL is a public archeology laboratory located within Independence
National Historical Park in downtown Philadelphia and operated as a
partnership among the park, the Northeast Region Archeology Program, and
the National Constitution Center (NCC). The NCC is an independent
non-profit organization.
The mission of the ILHCAL is to process, catalog, analyze and document an
assemblage of approximately one million artifacts recovered during
excavations conducted from 2000-2003 on the site of the NCC. The ILHCAL
also operates on-going programs designed to disseminate information to the
public on results of the excavations.
The NCC Site is a large urban archeological site encompassing more that one
half of a city block. Archeological investigations on the site identified
more than 250 features, including numerous privy pits and wells. Nearly
11,000 square feet of preserved historic ground surfaces were also
excavated. These represent backyard areas associated with early house lots,
as well as streets and alleyways. The NCC site represents the best
preserved and most extensive set of archeological resources dating to the
late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries yet excavated in Philadelphia.
Excavation on the block produced a large and varied artifact assemblage
which includes prehistoric, contact period and historic period deposits.
The bulk of the archeological assemblage dates from 1760-1830. On-going
analysis of this material is shedding light on the lives of the diverse
inhabitants of the block during the late Colonial and early Federal
periods. During this period the site was home to a diverse population
including wealthy Quaker merchants, free African Americans households,
laborers, artisans, and professionals.
Incumbents to the two advertised positions will function as laboratory
assistant and laboratory director, respectively. The senior position is
graded GS-9/11 ($45,062 - $70,882) and the assistant position will be hired
at a GS-9 ($45,062 - $58,586). Both positions include benefits and are for
one year terms, renewable for up to four years.
Additional information on these positions and instructions for prospective
applicants is available at www.usajobs.gov by searching on Job Announcement
Number PH-NF-6-112433 and PH-NF-6-112434. Applications will be accepted
during the open period from June 12 to July 27, 2006.
