Daily Life and Diversity in 18thCentury Philadelphia -- Independence Park
Institute teacher workshop
This summer, 20 lucky educators will get to participate in the Summer
Institute for Teachers which is going to be held at Independence National
Historical Park July 17-21, 2006. This one-week workshop will enable
4th-8th grade teachers to understand daily life and diversity in 18th
century Philadelphia. Topics covered will include archeology, Benjamin
Franklin, yellow fever, religion, and Philadelphia as the Capital of the
United States. This institute will prepare teachers to use historic sites
and primary source documents to enhance their teaching and to inspire
students with on-site and virtual programs that will make history come
alive in the classroom and beyond. All participating teachers will receive
a $300 stipend, books, and other teaching resource materials on daily life
and diversity in 18th century Philadelphia. Through readings, discussions,
and field trips to sites in Independence National Historical Park and the
historic area, teachers will gain a better understanding of what it was
like to be a part of Philadelphia in the 18th century. Continuing education
credits for Pennsylvania (Act 48) and New Jersey teachers will also be
provided. For applications and detailed information on institute programs,
visit the Education Programs page at www.nps.gov/inde or
www.independenceparkinstitute.com. Applications must be postmarked by March
31, 2006. Questions? Contact Amber Kraft, Independence Park Institute,

Archeology Learning Lab at the Independence Living History Center
Independence Park Institute, Independence National Historical Park
The next learning space that the Independence Park Institute will undertake
is an Archeology Learning Lab. The Archeology Learning Lab will be home to
the program Archeology: History Found in Pieces. This is a program geared
for grades 5-12 in which students will get to take on the role of
archeologists and piece together the stories of the buried past. Classes
participating in this program will get hands-on experience from replica
artifacts. They will also have the opportunity to see real archeologists at
work processing artifacts from the dig at the National Constitution Center.
Keep an eye out for this program to be ready in Spring 2006.
