Here we have a major problem about ethics because they are not the same in
different countries -note attitudes to execution. Metal detecting is legal
(except on limited protected sites) with the permission of the landowner in
the UK  though controversial amongst archaeologists in Britain. However, our
democratically elected government has responded by putting up large sums of
money to have their finds recorded by trained arcaheologists and data-based.
Most counties have a Portable Antiquities specialist annexed to their museum
service.
