Erica,
About three years back Hunter Research, Inc. excavated a rectangular
stone-lined privy about seven feet deep which had a stone slab covering the
entire base. We were puzzled also. I thought perhaps it was put in place
to retard drainage through the sandy soils or perhaps make cleaning easier.
The privy was associated with a wealthy family c.1805-1830. The house was
located along the Delaware River in Trenton. The work was completed for
NJDOT ahead of road improvements to NJ Route 29.

Subject: Privy Slab Base
I'm posting this request for information for one of our field directors...
While excavating a late 19th century privy in downtown San Francisco we
encountered a granite slab base. The privy corner posts rested on top of the
slab. Has anyone ever encountered this before?
I have excavation photographs available if anyone is interested.
Thank you,
