There is what is apparently an old song about a somewhat vain young woman named Charlotte freezing to death on a sleigh ride rather than wear sensible warm clothing:

"Charlotte was a frozen corpse
 and words spoke never more"

The two reasons I have heard are (1) because they have no moveable parts (no
articulation) and (2)because they were gifts for children that were used to
cool cups of tea or other hot beverages (they were, like party favors, given
as a gift.

Anyone else have more info?
