I'd estimate ca. 25 km from the scale in our Cadogan guide to Northern
Spain--a good, but not great, guide to the area. By the way, if you are
driving along the coast, St Jean de Luz is a nice French Basque
village--although a bit touristy-- and an interesting comparison to the
villages in Spain. In case you haven't heard, northern Spain is more
industrial than the south and it was a bit startling to us--being from
Alaska-to find large rock quarries, cement factories, and wood pulp plants
scattered about otherwise beautiful scenery. Worth reading before you go is
Mark Kurlansky's "Basque History of the World".
