I've never heard any of these composers in Milwaukee and I'd sure like
to. I have heard Tippett in Boston and Shapero in Chicago. Milwaukee
is in fact playing a lot of American symphonies this season--in consequence
of a large directed gift, I have heard, and I'd love to be able to sponsor
that sort of thing myself. For years I have wanted orchestras to play
more music of this sort, both because I like it and because it would
prove to audiences that not all "modern" music is like Wuorinen's.
