Having followed this thread, concerning Furtwaengler and his activities
during the Nazi era, let me commend to the list a book written in the late
1940's by Berta Geismar, who was Furtwaengler's secretary until, while a
practicing Lutheran, had a distant uncle who was Jewish.  Goebel's did not
think it proper to have as his secretary one not of pure Aryan lineage.
Geismar left Germany to become secretary to Sir Thomas Beecham.  It's an
interesting book and I recommend it to all you following this thread.
