While my experience singing lieder was limited to my vocal studies as
an undergraduate, from a musical perspective, most of the lieder I sang
had rather substantial piano parts.  I doubt I could have done justice
to the accompaniments while singing.  It also seemed that the piano parts
had more of a life of their own and that lieder is really more of a
collaboration.
