Amongst my favorite liturgical works in the Austrian tradition is Michael
Haydn's Requiem c-moll fuer Fuersterzbischof Sigismund von Schrattenbach,
better known by its Latin title Missa pro defuncto Archiepiscopo Sigismundo,
a work that apparently had a large influence on WAM's Requiem. I have
two LP recordings of it, both led by Ernst Hinreiner and both on the
Scwhann Music Sacra label. One of them (1980 Salzburg) has the following
soli: Siglinde Damasch (s), Gabriele Schrenkenbach (a), Chris Merritt
(t), Helmut Mueller (b).
The other has the same (b), but tenor Erich Zureck, Maria Taborsky (s),
Margarete Kisell (a).
The problem is that the only CD I could find of it is the one on Hungaroton
conducted by Helmut Rilling and it simply does not do the work justice
as I recall the LPs which I no longer play. So I guess that digitizing
my few remaining LPs is becoming a pressing need.
