"True" bamboos are actually in the grass family, and probably only useful
for the pollen. Japanese knotweed is Polygonum cuspidatum, a different
family altogether, and more closely related to plants like rhubarb. In fact
the fresh shoots can be used just like rhubarb to make tasty pie.
