Morning Andrew and ASTC gang,
I've worked this problem before and found that "Shure" a wireless mic is good (or a Shure wireless mic is good) as long as, as John said, they are taken care of. Which can be tough. Expect them to be dropped, swung, banged, etc. From my theatre years I know there are other ways to mic people that don't require an actual microphone. There are stage mics that are flat plastic panels that pick up sound that can be placed around a stage floor that could work.

My suggestions is to contact a local theatre group in your area and talk to their technical director or sound people and see if they have any good leads in your area. Have one of them come out and give you some recommendation? Make sure when you do get a mic that you don't get a line that's about to be discontinued (which I ran into once) cause when it does need repairs or replacement parts there won't be any.

I also share John's feeling that a wired, stationary mic, might be your best. The wired mics do tend to be more heavy duty and durable than most wireless. You'll just need an adjustable stand to accommodate height differences.

I won't even begin to talk about signal issues with wireless mics and interference and proper placement of your antennae pick-up etc etc.

Hi Andrew,

Not to be too much of a wise guy the answer to your question is probably a resounding "NO"

We used a Shure wireless mic at our machine shop in Greenfield Village while I was there and it was fine---if---and it is a big if--- everything was treated carefully. As we all know, the "Little Dears" as we like to call them, are not careful at all.

I'd suggest one of two approaches:

1) Wireless: Use the cheapest consumer version you can find and make it a replacement type part.

2) Wired: fix the mic down in some way and let them gather about it. Not very "Karaoke" ish but it willbe reliable and last a long time.

Good luck!
