Hi Beryl,
The neutral response: "neither helped nor confused me" adds a new variable. Being unhelpful isn't necessarily confusing. So now you have three variables: helpful, remindful, and confusing/clarifying.
Although I've abbreviated the way she does this, one of the techniques Beverly Serrell uses is to ask visitors to finish this sentence: I didn't know, or it reminded me that... So with this in mind, couldn't you use your scale labeled with:
It was confusing and didn't help or remind me of anything at all.
It didn't help or remind me
I'm not sure
It was helpful ........How?______________________
It helped me a lot ......How?____________________
I think when you get to the positive side of the scale- that remembering and clarifying are both considered "helpful" and so you don't need to differentiate those like you did on the negative side. Asking visitors to fill in the how should get you the "I remembered or I learned" sort of answers.
'Hope this is helpful. Please let me know what you end up with.
Monica
