Although Bryson's book is terrific and a fun read, my candidate for the best
history of science book is Boorstin's "The Discoverers". He wrote three similar
history books. One is on the arts and literature, I think. Don't recall the
topic of the third. Maybe arts was one and literature the other. They didn't get
quite the reception of "The Discoverers".
