Nice review by Steve Schwartz. There are at least two other chamber Das
Lied recordings: Mark Wigglesworth, The Premier Ensemble (RCA 9026-68043);
and Philippe Herreweghe, Ensemble Musique Oblique (Harmonia Mundi 2981477).
I think there might be only one standalone chamber Der Abschied, which
I happen to be listening to right now: John Nelson conducting Stephanie
Blythe and the Ensemble A Sei Voci (Virgin Classics 24354 57022). The
latter disc is coupled with Brahms's Alto Rhapsodie and Wagner's Wesendonck
songs. Actually, I bought this disc mostly for the Brahms and Wagner,
as I can't stand incomplete Mahler discs. I'm going to have to reconsider
my philosophical objections, because this seems to be an excellent
Abschied, at least on first hearing (as said, in progress).
I think I've read somewhere that the chamber Das Lied really should be
called the Riehm version, as Schoenberg gave it up at a very rudimentary
stage.
