The NY Philharmonic make fun of audience members who clap between
movements. Last season, I attended an event that was mainly populated
by society folk, not the usual Phil audience. This event (with Lang
Lang) was broadcast live on PBS.

THe audience, who didn't know any better, enthusiastically applauded
between each movement. I saw many of the violists (they were closest
to me) give each other "looks" and smirks each time this happened. I,
for one, was embarrassed for us New Yorkers who regularly attend the
concerts. It was obvious that the audience thought this was the correct
thing to do, rather than just a display of emotion.

I know of one major vocal recitalist who glared so sternly at a woman
in the front row who persisted in applauding between songs of a cycle
that she left the hall in tears!
