CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

The 5th Annual Leadership Initiative in Science Education (LISE 5)
Discovery in Our Classrooms: Inquiry and the Nature of Science
27-28 April 2005
Chemical Heritage Foundation
315 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

The theme for the Chemical Heritage Foundation's fifth annual science
education conference will be inquiry and the nature of science. Kicking
off the conference will be a hands-on workshop on process-oriented,
guided-inquiry learning (POGIL) by Rick Moog, principal investigator for
the POGIL Project, and professor of chemistry at Franklin and Marshall
College.

Among twelve featured speakers are Lawrence Lowery, professor emeritus
at the University of California, Berkeley, and principal investigator
for the Full Option Science System (FOSS); William McComas, director,
Project to Advance Science Education at the University of Southern
California; Lynn Rankin, director, Institute for Inquiry at the
Exploratorium in San Francisco; and Norman Lederman, chair, Math and
Science Education at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and
nationally known speaker on the nature of science.

In addition to examining both inquiry and the nature of science as tools
for developing science literacy, conference sessions will discuss
preparing teachers to use inquiry in their classrooms; the role of
inquiry in museums, science centers, and other informal settings; how to
provide inquiry-based learning for students with learning differences;
and how industry can support inquiry-based science education. For more
information see http://www.chemheritage.org/events/lise5.html .

Follow-up Conference on Universal Design for STEM Education
The theme of learning differences and science education will be explored
on 29 April 2005 in a conference on universal design (UD) for science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The
conference will bring together leading experts in UD, including those
with an interest in K-16 science education. Keynote speakers are David
Rose and Thomas West. Rose is founder and co-executive director of the
Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST). West is an author
affiliated with the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study at George Mason
University.

Registration
The LISE 5 conference fee is $40, which includes dinner on 27 April and
lunch on 28 April. This fee may be waived under special circumstances.
