Hi all,
I'm looking for publications on American vs. European informal science
education and public programs, so would really appreciate any suggestions
for reading material. More details below...
I'm spending the summer working with the new Koshland Science Museum in
Washington DC, which has been favorably compared with European science
centers. I'm intrigued by what I've heard: that the Koshland follows a
European tradition of targetting older audiences, and having a stronger
focus on dialogue and debate.
This is something I'd like to explore through a Watson fellowship, which
gives graduating college seniors money to travel outside of the US for a
year to carry out a proposed project. The program encourages experiential
rather than academic projects, and I'm considering spending the year
travelling around science centers, science cafes, etc. in Europe,
possibly focusing on public programs that deal with current issue science
(the Dana Centre comes to mind, as does la Cite des Sciences) -- if there
are more than a few of such programs.
I'm currently doing some background research on the topic, but need some
help locating resources. I'm trying to get my facts straight: Does this
American-European difference exist? What approaches have European
programs taken to facilitate dialogue? I'd really appreciate being
pointed towards publications and examples that have addressed such
issues. Also, if you've given any thought to this matter, I'm eager to
know what questions you're asking too.
And of course, comments, critiques, suggestions and questions are always
welcome.
Thanks for your help!
Su-Lyn Poon.
