ASTC Session Proposal: Women in Science

Working title for the session: Sparking interest: Ways to involve young
women in research.

I am interested in submitting a proposal for the 2004 ASTC Conference.
The theme of the session is focused on different ways to interest junior
high and high school girls in research careers.

Right now, we are using partnerships with the Boston area research
institutions to bring young women researchers to the museum. We are
also partnered with the Boston and Cambridge public schools as well as
the Community Outreach department to invite several girls’ after school
groups and minority organizations to the event. The girls that attend
will have an opportunity to talk with women researchers to ask about
careers, their paths and their interests.

In the past, we have used our partnerships to bring in women researchers
for presentations, but thought it would be more effective if the
researchers could have more contact with the audience.

I’d like to know if anyone is in the midst of a project or are planning
a project to bring the research world into the focus of young women or
underrepresented populations. If you are, and would like to talk about
the result of your work, please let me know and possibly we could set up
a session!

If you are interested in setting up a partnership for this proposal,
please contact me at

Thank you!
