The Americas Vocal Ensemble Presents "Canticas y Madrigales"- Music of
Colombian Composer Luis Antonio Escobar At Flushing Library On October 5

The Americas Vocal Ensemble, Nelly Vuksic, Music Director, will present
a very special concert entitled "Canticas y Madrigales" - The Music of
Luis Antonio Escobar on Sunday, October 5, 2003, 3:00 PM at Flushing
Library, 41-17 Main Street, Flushing, Queens.

This programs will feature choral music of the great Colombian composer
Luis Antonio Escobar.  The AVE will present his "Canticas", musical gems
based on traditional "coplas" from the rich folklore of Colombia and
"Madrigales", that set to music the poetry of such outstanding Colombian
poets as Leon de Greiff, Jorge Rojas and Giovanni Quessep.  The programs
will also include Escobar's Bambuquerias for solo piano, performed by
Cesar Vuksic, as well as solos for voice and piano.

This concerts will celebrate the 4Tay Records CD re-release of Luis
Antonio Escobar - Canticas y Madrigales, an album originally recorded
in Bogota in 1982.

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization
Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts,
administered by Queens Council on the Arts.

The Americas Vocal Ensemble, founded in 1982 by Nelly Vuksic, is a
professional chamber group whose mission is to foster understanding
among the people of the Americas and to preserve the musical and cultural
richness of the diverse countries in North and South America.  Through
its concerts, educational activities and recordings the Americas Vocal
ensemble brings to its audiences an enjoyable and rarely performed
repertory encompassing the entire range of music from the Americas
from the colonial period to contemporary times.

During many seasons, it served as Artist-in Residence at the Americas
Society in New York City where it premiered over 100 contemporary works
by composers of all the Americas, including some written especially for
the group.

In addition to this album, Luis Antonio Escobar - Canticas y Madrigales,
the Americas Vocal Ensemble has recorded music by American Composer
Joelle Wallach" for the Opus One label, "Serenata" and "Gala del Dia"
for North- South Recording and the ever-popular "A Hispanic Christmas

Luis Antonio Escobar was born in Villapinzon, Colombia in 1925.  His
teachers included outstanding musicians like Nicolas Nabokov, Heitor
Villalobos and Carlos Chavez.

His music has been played around the world by such distinguished
conductors as Jascha Horenstein, Howard Mitchell, Olav Roots and Carlos
Chavez.  In the United States, Escobar's Preludes for Percussion were
choreographed by George Balanchine in 1960 for the Ballet Theatre of New
York.  The Americas Vocal Ensemble premiered his Canticas y Madrigales
at the Americas Society in New York City and in Washington D.C.'s
Organization of American States in 1983 and since then these works have
been an important part of its repertory.  Pianist Cesar Vuksic has
performed Escobar's Bambuquerias in many USA as well as Latin America
venues.

Luis Antonio Escobar composed more than three hundred works that include
operas, cantatas, ballets, symphonies, concertos, film scores, chamber
works for many instrumental combinations, a capella choral works and
Bambuquerias for piano.  He was the author of many books about the music
of the Americas.  He conducted extensive research of his native country
and the rest of South America and the Caribbean, including music of the
regions colonial period.  He died in Miami in 1993.
