I just checked the hive again today. I may be mistaken about the drone
cells. The rounded caps may be due to improper construction of the cells,
ie, they are not deep enough so the cells appear taller than the uncapped
cells around them.
I looked up drone laying in a few books and they say the queen lays drone
eggs on the side of the cell. All of the eggs I see are on the bottom. In
fact, I am seeing multiple eggs in the bottom of the cells which may be
good news about the queen.
The major problem I see is that the older worker bees are not building comb
and are slowing dying off. I only have 1 other hive, which is also weak.
I think the only way to save the hive is to unite workers and brood from
another colony. I thought I might be able to just wait it out but the very
small number of capped brood wasn't encouraging. When they emerge there
just doesn't seem like there will be enough bees in the near future to draw
out the comb and take care of the feeding, etc.
