Lisa's question brings to mind the efforts of several science center
people, a few years ago, to articulate intellectual property
guidelines that might serve the needs of this field, with its strong
culture of sharing and mutual aid. There's a write-up on the ASTC web

In a later article, Sally Duensing wrote about ways the Exploratorium
has both "imported" and "exported" ideas.

Maybe there are analogies with the open source movement. Even though
the underlying software is freely available, there are companies
packaging and selling different distributions. (That's what I
did--installation was easier!)
