I have found that SmartBoards are very Popular with teachers. Obviously
the disadvantage of any instructional technology is whether its is
available regularly enough so that the users can get comfortable and
find innovative ways to use them. So the fact that SmartBoards seem to
be in more widespread use in k-12 than a number of other technologies
(at least in NY City Schools and Union training centers--I use them
frequently). Teachers also tell me that they like them, which is
important to motivate teachers to use technology. If you think you would
want to use them for teacher training, you might want to see if the
cohort you are working with has regular access to them in their
classroom or a media center. A simple survey might do. As far as which
models work the best, the flat screen overlays are the most convenient
b/c no projector is needed. They are compatible with both Macs and PCs.
They do require alignment when you first start them up, which is
relatively simple, but still adds to what you need to do to prepare for
their use. We also use them on the exhibit floor. Here is a pic of an
interactive map which people can navigate with their hands.

Hopefully this info is useful.
