The Chinese Canadian Historical Society (CCHS) is hosting its Second Chinese Canadian History Fair at Malaspina University-College, Nanaimo Campus, on Saturday, November 5, 2005 from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. CCHS is a society whose major objective is to bring out the unknown history of the Chinese in British Columbia. For more information about the organization, see the website: http://www.cchsbc.ca
The History Fair will offer a sampling of the various kinds of research on Chinese Canadian History currently being done in this province, especially by members of CCHS. Subjects will include genealogies and family histories, artefacts from Chinese sites, Chinese women aviators in BC, early Chinese women, Chinese cemeteries, the Vancouver riot of 1907 and more.
In addition, CCHS and Whitecap Books present Janice Wong as she launches her new book: Chow - From China to Canada: Memories of Food and Family <http://www.whitecap.ca/search_individual.asp?isbn_search=155285650X>. There will be a formal presentation by Janice, followed by a panel discussion on Chinese restaurants. Besides Janice, the panel will include Ron or Gerry Wong of Mrs. Riches Dinner Club Cafe, third generation Nanaimo restaurateurs, and Imogene Lim, an anthropologist who teaches food and culture, as well as having an association with a Vancouver Chinatown restaurant, namely, the W.K. Gardens. Janice's book will be available for purchase.
Writer/filmmaker Karin Lee will also be present for Q&A following the Vancouver Island première of her latest film, Comrade Dad <http://www.movingimages.ca/catalogue/Cultdiverse/comradedad.html>, in which Karin reflects on her father Wally Lee and the communist bookstore that he ran from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s. CCHS and Moving Images are proud to sponsor Karin's appearance.
For those who have an interest in other films with a Chinese Canadian theme, Under the Willow Tree (1997), A Tribe of One (2003), and Letters from Home (2001) will also be shown.
The Fair will take place in Rooms 109 and 111 of Building 356 (Education & Social Sciences), of Malaspina University-College, which is located at the top of Fourth Street in Nanaimo (see campus map: http://www.mala.ca/campusmap.htm). The public is welcome and admission is free to both participants and viewers. The displays will be available from 10:30 AM and will continue until 4 PM in Room 111. The emphasis will be upon meeting and talking to researchers.
The programme in Room 109 will have a set schedule:
11:00am Janice Wong's presentation followed by panel discussion
12:30pm Comrade Dad, followed by Q&A with Karin Lee
1:30pm Under the Willow Tree
