Ben -- Your coin seems to predate your site by quite a few years. It's a
Spanish colonial silver cob, a 1-real coin -- the denomination indicated by
the "I" in upper center -- minted at Potosí in the viceroyalty of Peru (now
in Bolivia); the "P" at bottom right is the mint mark, which was repeated at
upper left but now lost to wear. The numbers at bottom center seem to be
"83". If that is correct, and perhaps you can see it better on the actual
coin, then it was minted in 1683. If that is the correct date, then there
should be an assayer's mark -- a "V" for Pedro de Villar -- at top right and
bottom left, but both seem to be worn away. Maybe you'll be able to make out
one of them on the real thing.

Subject: Coin Identification
Please consult the web link below.
This includes a photograph of a silver coin found in a test unit during a
Phase I/II investigation of an 18th-early 19th century domestic site in
southern Maryland. We have some "hints" as to its date and origin, but
would appreciate the wisdom of others. I suspect someone from the Southeast
US has come across similar artifacts.
