For what it is worth: Years ago, in the 1980's, I ran bees up north of Indianapolis, Indiana, just six to ten hives. I always had four 3/4" blocks of wood underneath my outer covers at the four corners year around. Whether due to luck or whatever, I never had a deadout in the spring, or at any time of the year for that matter. But..... That was a long time ago in a world far, far away.
