Request for information on importer marked ceramics from New Orleans
Importers.
Henderson and Gains and their successor companies were major
importers of English ceramics into New Orleans. Some of the wares they
sold had their importer's mark along with the potter's mark. In 1987 Art
Black and Cynthia Brandimarte published an article on the history of these
partnerships and gave some information about the distribution of the marks.
More marks and types have show up since then and this information has been
summarized on Amy Earls' web blog. We are seeking further listings of
these marks and the locations where they have been found. Amy has asked me
to post the following information and link to the paper on the Henderson
and Gains partnerships.

Datable floral painted and transfer-printed ceramics made by Davenport
Brothers of Staffordshire and imported by the Henderson partnerships of New
Orleans occur on archaeological sites in the South and west of the
Mississippi River (and antique examples occur across the United States).
Article updated today with new mark and painted pearlware pictures from
Sara Hahn of Coastal Environments. Comments, corrections,
additional data much appreciated.
