Cassini Mission Produces Spectacular Images of Saturn Tonight!
The Space Science Instiute has the contract to process the imaging of the
Cassini mission to Saturn, which is producing phenomenal images of Saturn
tonight. The spacecraft completes its seven-year journey and enters orbit around
Saturn tonight. This historic mission is producing breathtaking images of
Saturn, its delicate rings and enigmatic moons.
The Space Science Institute, a non-profit research and education organization
that has developed traveling exhibits such as Marsquest and has some exciting
projects in the pipeline, such as Giant Planets.
Only 30 hours after orbit insertion, Cassini will pass high over the South
Pole of haze-enshrouded Titan. The images and data from that encounter will
help remake our understanding of this planet-sized moon. Cassini will then head
out on its long, looping first orbit one of more than 70 planned over the next
four years.
There should be visible national press coverage of the mission throughout
the weekend (ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, NPR, etc.).
