Use distilled water then... But based on the photo..it appears that any
underlying metal at this point based on the external corrosion has
already changed any possible good cast metal to iron graphite..i suggest
you xray and based on that determintaion plan your conservation method
from that point

Anne, there's no such thing as a deionized water bath .. water dissolves
CO2 too fast.
I was a QC manager .. we made ball bearings for nuclear reactors .. one
quality test {checking for the presence of iron .. i.e., contamination
from the grinder wheels} was to put the cobalt bearing races in
distilled water .. while holding the Ph!
Doesn't happen .. soon's you pop the cork on a distilled water bottle ..
there are LOTS of little H's + CO'3s (from carbonic acid) running
around.
