Carl,
There are actually 3 volumes to this series. The second (Lost Man's River) is reportedly a real slog, as it recounts one of Watson's children researching his family history and trying to get the facts on his legend. Matthiessen apparently took all of his extensive notes on the inter-related families of the area and made a book of it. The 3rd book (Bone by Bone) is told by Mister Watson, an autobiography that covers his whole life and attempts to explain some his behavior. The friend who recommended the first book said to just skip the second one, and the reviews on Amazon agree. I would love to hear the 1st book read because of the language. i have been slipping into South Florida cracka-speak on occasions of late as a result of reading the book. it would make a great movie, too, but Hollywood would botch it by trying to make it more clear as to who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. and they'd cast a couple of big stars to draw people in and they'd look ridiculous trying to do the accent.
