Yes, they are called fruit cellars and can be found ranging from a small
hole under the kitchen to large underground rooms now mistaken for stops on
the underground railroad.  Most farms in "ye olde days" probably had these,
to keep the food fresh as also to keep it from freezing.  I know one family
that still packs their potatoes in straw in a large pit dug for that
purpose.  They never use the same pit two years in a row for fear of
contamination.
