Thanks to all who responded on the subject of the steam cotton press at
Galveston, Texas. Your suggestions are most useful and I will follow up
on them.
Subsequent to my posting, I discovered that there is, in fact, a plan to
preserve one of these tremendous old machines on the site (although
moved from its present location) as a monument, so the county has been
giving some thought to this matter in their planning. At least they
appear not to be in imminent danger of demolition, which was one of my
initial concerns.
FWIW, an additional look into the history of the site indicates that
although the Cotton Concentration Co. warehouses where the presses are
located were built in 1920, the presses themselves are somewhat older,
having been purchased second-hand from another pressing firm here.
