Are there any science centers that have partnered with local bars or
restaurants to present scientist-led programs at the location of the bar
or restaurant (not at the science center)? We have been alerted to the
Cafe Scientifique program that seems to be quite successful in England and
in a few locations in the U.S., but no such program exists here in
Chicago. We are possibly interested in starting something here, but I
wanted to see if any science centers had been approached about this, had
started a program, had stopped it for some reason, etc.
If you aren't familiar with Cafe Scientifique, the main website is
http://www.cafescientifique.org/ (and I had never heard of it until about
a week ago; a New York Times article was also published recently about it,
too). The short description on the website's homepage is:
Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a
glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and
technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even
theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.
Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, not a shop
window for science. We are committed to promoting public engagement with
science and to making science accountable.
If anyone has additional information or insights, I would be most
appreciative. Thank you, in advance! Replies off-list are fine, unless
others would like to see the responses.
